Endowed with a budget of 108.6 million dirhams (MDH), this project is part of the sixth strategic axis of the Regional Development Programme (PDR), dedicated to the protection of natural resources and ecology in the face of climate change.
The main objective of this initiative is to reduce atmospheric pollution generated by the pottery and lime sectors, while ensuring the sustainability of the environmental upgrading of traditional businesses in the region.
Speaking during this assembly, the President of the Chamber of Handicrafts, Naji Fakhari, emphasised that this project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve the energy efficiency of kilns, modernise artisanal production methods, improve product quality, and, ultimately, improve local living conditions.
It is, according to him, a global approach aimed at transforming artisanal practices to make them more environmentally friendly while preserving their economic viability.
For his part, the Regional Director of Handicrafts in Fès, Abderrahim Belkhayat, specified that 249 pottery units in Fès and 60 lime production units in Sefrou will be concerned in a first phase. Mr. Belkhayat also proposed the generalisation of this initiative to all cities in the Fès-Meknès region, thus highlighting the importance of this project for the sustainable development of the region.
According to the terms of the agreement, the financing of this project relies on a collaboration between several institutional actors, notably the Regional Council of Fès-Meknès which will contribute 29 million dirhams, while the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development will provide 79.6 million dirhams.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, the Wilaya of the Fès-Meknès region, the Sefrou province, and the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion for development are also stakeholders in this project.
During this meeting, the Chamber's officials emphasised the importance of support and control of polluting activities in the handicraft sector to ensure the success of this ecological conversion operation.
