The announcement of this came during an awareness-raising meeting organized yesterday, Monday, at the initiative of the High Atlas Foundation in cooperation with a number of its partners, at the "Laglate" primary educational institution in the city of Dakhla, and aimed to shed light on the importance of reforestation operations in preserving the environment and spreading environmental awareness among the youth.
In this context, the president of the High Atlas Foundation, Yossef Ben-Meir, said in a statement to the press that a nursery will soon be established in Dakhla capable of producing 350,000 fruit trees per year, adding that the Foundation, which has launched many projects, especially in the field of sustainable agriculture, has brought nine nurseries into existence across various regions of the Kingdom.
After confirming that these nurseries produce more than 3.2 million trees annually, which are distributed to various farmers and institutions, he expressed the hope that they will be able to produce five million seedlings annually starting from next year.
For his part, Chemsedine Ouled Sidi Baba, director at the same foundation, considered that the latter, through its long experience in the field, intends, in cooperation with its partners, especially the Wilaya of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, to launch the project of establishing this nursery as well as carrying out a vast reforestation operation in Dakhla that will include the city's green belt extending over an area of 60 hectares.
He added that it is known that the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region has distinctive environmental characteristics, which means that the trees that will be planted will have to take into account their suitability for the weather and climate prevailing in the region, noting that the Foundation, which works to improve the quality of the environment through projects aimed at achieving the high environmental standards required by modern cities.
For his part, Aslima Amrez, the regional coordinator for environmental and sustainable development programs at the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Academy, considered that the choice of a primary educational institution to announce reforestation projects in Dakhla is of great importance because it will contribute to raising environmental awareness among the youth and the population in general.
This awareness-raising meeting, which was attended in particular by educational staff in addition to representatives of civil society, was marked by the students of the educational institution planting a group of trees in the middle of the school courtyard, and following musical segments in which the Burkinabe artist, Aïcha Stella Sagnon, who sings for peace and love between peoples, performed songs and national tunes commemorating the epic of the Green March.
