In the middle of winter, a fire ravaged the forests of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region. Known for its dense forest cover, the forest in question, far from being subject to the threat of fires, was struck by fire under unexpected conditions.
This situation has sparked a wave of questions about the causes that led to the flames igniting in the middle of winter, a period when temperatures are generally low in this region.
Activists shared, on their social media pages, videos and photos showing flames rising in the "Mouktala" forest, located in the Azla-Zaitoune commune, in the province of Tetouan. The wind speed contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Said Benjira, Regional Director of Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification (DREFLCD) in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, confirmed that rescue teams intervened to extinguish the fire, which had broken out last night, and managed, around five o'clock this Monday morning, to bring it under control.
He explained that "personnel from Water and Forests, Civil Protection, the Royal Gendarmerie, and local authorities were mobilised. Everyone mobilised and, thank God, the fire was brought under control around five o'clock in the morning ".
