Al Hoceima – The regional road connecting Targuist and Chqran, passing through Beni Amart in the Al Hoceima province, was reopened on Tuesday, thanks to the continuous efforts of the intervention teams from the Provincial Directorate of Equipment, Transport, and Logistics to clear the accumulated snow.
The Provincial Director of Equipment, Transport, and Logistics in Al Hoceima, Youssef Sahimi, explained in a statement to the Moroccan News Agency (MAP) that the teams from the Provincial Directorate of Equipment, in coordination with local authorities, intervened to clear the snow accumulated on Regional Road No. 5204, connecting Targuist and Chqran via the commune of Beni Amart. He highlighted that the road was opened to traffic on Tuesday morning, facilitating the transport of citizens and goods.
He added that the specialised field teams, comprising engineers, technicians, and field workers, worked quickly and effectively to complete the task as soon as possible. He noted that a range of specialised machinery and equipment were deployed for snow removal, including specialised trucks, bulldozers, and snow-melting vehicles. The Provincial Directorate of Equipment in Al Hoceima has 16 vehicles, including 6 specifically for snow removal.
On another note, he revealed that field teams had spread salt on National Road No. 2, connecting Chefchaouen and Al Hoceima via Bab Taza. He explained that salting is an essential measure during winter to combat snow and prevent ice formation, using trucks equipped with spreading mechanisms proactively and periodically to ensure effective intervention.
The official mentioned that the Al Hoceima province is characterised by rugged mountainous terrain, with the highest peak reaching 2,456 metres at Jbel Tidghine. This mountainous nature results in significant snowfall, sometimes lasting for several months, affecting hundreds of kilometres of national, regional, and local roads.
In the same context, he pointed out that snowfall sometimes disrupts or cuts off traffic on certain road sections, particularly on National Road No. 2 connecting Chefchaouen and Al Hoceima via Bab Taza, National Road No. 8 connecting Targuist and Taounate via Beni Bounechar and Tabarant, Regional Road 509 connecting Issaguen and Lakhlaf, Regional Road 5204 connecting Targuist and Chqran via Beni Amart, as well as Regional Road No. 4115 between Moulay Ahmed Cherif and Jebha.
Regarding winter season preparations, Sahimi highlighted that the Provincial Directorate of Equipment prepares for this season by taking proactive and precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of weather fluctuations on traffic and the road network in general.
In this regard, on-call duty is activated, and all necessary human and logistical resources are mobilised for intervention. Snow removal machinery is redeployed near road sections most prone to snow accumulation. Coordination is enhanced between provincial and local authorities, the Royal Gendarmerie, and neighbouring provincial directorates to implement appropriate solutions. Information and communication about road conditions are also disseminated through various communication channels.
