Measles, known as "Bouhamroun", continues to spark debate and fear in the city of Tangier, after cases of infection were recorded in a number of educational institutions, which left the regional directorate of the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports in Tangier-Assilah in a state of alert, as it intensified its actions to confront the disease and contain its spread.
The same education directorate launched an awareness campaign today, Wednesday, for the benefit of parents and guardians of pupils to urge them to ensure their children are vaccinated and to complete the necessary doses for every pupil who has not received the vaccine as required, in direct coordination with the services of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.
According to official data obtained by the Hespress electronic newspaper, the schools of the city of Tangier, numbering about 400 institutions, distributed between public and private, recorded 15 cases of "Bouhamroun", including private schools.
According to the same data, the total number of measles infections in Tangier schools reached 75 cases, including cases that have recovered and returned to resume their studies, while a responsible source in the directorate confirmed that the situation is "normal and does not call for concern".
Regarding whether any deaths were recorded among pupils due to the highly contagious disease, the source, who did not wish to be named, explained that a single death case was recorded among the pupils who were infected with measles, stressing that the case in question was a pupil who suffered from chronic diabetes, and she contracted "Bouhamroun" before she passed away.
The same source indicated that the Tangier-Assilah prefecture held a meeting last week with officials from various institutions to assess the epidemiological situation and discuss ways to confront it and contain the spread of the disease in schools and other various institutions, considering that the number of infections recorded in schools, which include 319,000 pupils, remains "very small and does not raise any fear".
This news comes in a context where Morocco is recording a worrying rise in the number of deaths due to measles infection, as 107 deaths have been recorded since October 2023, half of which affected children under 12 years old, in addition to twenty thousand confirmed infections.
