Dozens of traditional artisans working in the local Zellige sector in the city of Fez expressed their dissatisfaction and anger at the State Secretariat in charge of Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy for failing to find solutions to provide raw materials and curb the encroachment of mechanisation on the sector.
The craftsmen organised an open sit-in and a protest in the Benjellik craft district, demanding authorisation to exploit a new quarry to provide the clay material used in the manufacture of local Zellige, after the sources they relied on stopped, especially since the absence of raw material causes professionals significant financial losses and threatens the continuation of this ancient craft.
