Fez – Participants in the 39th edition of the National Day of the Architect, organised today, Tuesday, in Fez, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, emphasised the important role of the architect in the transition towards sustainable and resilient spaces, calling for the adoption of innovative solutions to face climate challenges.
Architects and decision-makers, at the conclusion of this event organised under the theme “The Citizen Architect facing Climate Change: The Energy and Water Issue”, recommended the need to explore innovative approaches to promote sustainable resource management and strengthen the climate resilience of urban areas.
In this regard, they insisted on the need to integrate the principles of reuse and recycling for sustainable urban management, and to adopt urban planning and development that is adapted to climate change, particularly drought and flooding, and to adopt sustainable solutions to reduce the energy footprint of buildings, as well as to strengthen national and international cooperation for the optimal management of water and energy resources.
Focus was also placed on innovation and good practices through the adoption of circular economy principles “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” in urban water management, and the promotion of nature-based solutions (vegetation development, green infrastructure) to improve environmental sustainability, as well as advanced technologies (water flow sensors and water retention basins).
Regarding integrated urban planning, the participants recommended integrating climate risks into strategic planning documents, strengthening the capacities of actors to promote sustainable practices, and mobilising all actors for the resilient and sustainable management of water and energy resources.
It should be noted that this event, organised by the National Council of the National Order of Architects, in partnership with the Ministry of National Land Planning, Urbanism, Housing and City Policy, brought together architects, experts and decision-makers around a topic of current relevance: energy and water.
It is worth noting that this annual event, which was established to commemorate the historic speech delivered by His Majesty King Hassan II, may God rest his soul, on 14 January 1986 in Marrakech, was held this year in a context marked by an environmental emergency and focuses on the pivotal role of architects in the transition towards sustainable development, while reviewing innovative approaches to face the growing challenges associated with water stress and energy management.
This event also brought together heads of major international professional organisations, including the African Union of Architects, the Mediterranean Union of Architects, and the Union of Francophone Architects in Africa.
