Located in the Medina, about 50m from the "Bab Mérican", this magnificent museum of the former American Legation is the only national monument of the United States that lies in a foreign country, and with good reason; it was in Tangier that its independence was first pronounced in 1777. The building, dating from 1821, now houses a museum, a research library and a cultural center, which together make up one of the most interesting cultural enclaves in the city.
