APM Terminals Tangier completed seven years of operation on 24 July. This was an opportunity for the port operator, based in Tanger Med, to take stock of its main achievements since 2007. "As the result of a partnership between the A.P. Moller Maersk group and Akwa Group, APM Terminals Tangier has fostered the development of the transhipment industry since its creation, which was new to Morocco following the inauguration of Tanger Med," the group stated in a press release. To achieve this, it claims to have focused on training as a key driver for the development of this sector. The group, which has 800 employees, "has made considerable efforts in the training and professional fulfilment of its employees through skills development programmes adapted to each collaborator, as well as the promotion of social dialogue and the establishment of a motivating work environment," maintains APM Terminals. Furthermore, the operator has set itself the goal of improving the terminal's production facilities. The objective is to increase productivity and ensure a secure environment in the workplace to achieve "zero accidents". Consequently, the group has embarked on certification processes covering various aspects. It holds 4 certifications issued by Bureau Veritas: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and ISO 28000. On another note, and as part of the migration of APM Terminals to the Navis N4 information system, APM Terminals Tangier has become the largest terminal in the group to have adopted this system. An implementation that took 3 months, instead of the 6-month average for other terminals, the group indicates. "The migration to this new system allows for improved productivity by offering several integration and customisation possibilities, for example, position detection systems," the port operator specifies. It should be recalled that APM Terminals Tangier closed the month of June 2014 with 94,590 movements, thus beating its own record set in January 2011, when the terminal handled 93,442 movements. "This record is the result of APM Terminals Tangier's efforts to continuously improve its processes and equipment to reduce ship turnaround times and gain productivity," the group had declared in a statement. As a reminder, APM Terminals Tangier was created in March 2005 as a partnership between the A.P. Moller–Maersk group and Akwa Group. With a capacity of 1.8 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year, primarily focused on transhipment, the terminal has 800 linear metres of quay and 40 hectares of land.
