After the success of the four previous editions, this year, the Festival of Traditional World Music will praise the industrial and economic boom that Tangier and its region are experiencing with the theme of "Tangier, boom and culture." Major projects like Tangier Med, the TGV, Renault-Morocco, industrial zones, and free zones have propelled Mediterranean Tangier to the rank of great capitals. The "Tarab Tangier" Festival participates in this boom and thus contributes to the general effort of harmonious development of the city. As every year, "Tarab Tangier" strives in its programming to find a balance between the local and the international. We will see the participation of the American group Libana, composed of female musicians who use music as a tool for peaceful communication between peoples. A first in Morocco, a Japanese woman will present a unique show mixing Samurai tradition and flamenco dance. From Iran, it is the revelation voice of 2013, Mohammad Motamedi, who will sing the classics of the great Persian civilisation. He will be accompanied by musicians who will perform Kurdish airs in parallel.
From Morocco, from North to South, several musical colours will pass through the stages of Tarab, such as the "ayta" with the Bouâazzaoui brothers, then the "daqqa soudaniyya" (beating) with the mqaddem Ismail who will invite to the trance. From the heights of northern Morocco, Moulay Abdessalam Ibn Mashish, Rhoum Bakkali will sing, accompanied by a female voice and measured percussion, the poems and panegyrics of the "hadra chafchawniyya".
To close this rich programme, the organisers have chosen to promote a group of young musicians from Tangier: supervised by the "Confluences musicales" association and directed by the violinist Bachir Benyahya.
Several stages, several places
Despite many constraints, "Confluences musicales" remains faithful to its headquarters as the main stage of "Tarab Tangier" because precisely, this emblematic place possesses its own energy and holds the memory of the myth of Tangier. This does not prevent the instigators of this event from expanding their activity to other spaces. From the Haddad theatre, we move this year to the majestic Palace of the city of Tangier to close this event. This, while waiting for the officials to make the decision to restore and develop the Mendoubia gardens which had brought happiness, in the recent past, to several important events in the city. This approach will only contribute to the democratisation of this event by making it accessible to a greater number of spectators.
