Classified as a historical monument on 30 December 1950, the Caves of Hercules are in a state of constant degradation. The recent rains in the city of Tangier have led to the multiplication and widening of fissures on their interior and exterior walls. As it has already done for other natural and historical sites such as Villa Harris and the two forests of Perdicaris and Sloukia, the League for the Defence of Consumer Rights has launched an SOS via a press release to draw public attention to the risk of the disappearance of this important monument dating back to 5,000 BC. Faced with the indifference of officials, it denounces the proliferation of illegal construction and the implementation of new tourism projects in the surrounding area, thereby endangering the site.

Located 14 km west of the city of the Strait facing the sea, the Caves of Hercules have not benefited from any restructuring work for over fifty years, even though they continue to record a large number of visitors thanks to their natural beauty, mythological richness and heritage value. They were, however, the subject of a convention signed on 10 March 2007, during the time of the former mayor of Tangier, Dahmane Derham, for the rehabilitation and restoration of this historical and natural heritage. This convention, which was part of the good neighbourly relations policy over a period from 2007 to 2013 and launched by the European Union (EU), has still not been implemented.

Discovered during archaeological excavations conducted in 1878, the Caves of Hercules are located on the Atlantic coast at Achakar, not far from the famous Cape Spartel and near the Caves of Cotta. This allows them to stand majestically on the site facing the sea. The Caves of Hercules are distinguished by a humid, maritime climate and the exceptional shape of one of their cavities. They also owe their charm to a natural opening to the sea, which once served as a door. Officials are therefore called upon to react to save this historical heritage which continues to be the pride of the region.
