There is great concern among Moroccan international transport professionals regarding the terrorist attacks they are being subjected to, especially at the Mauritanian-Malian borders and along the roads connecting the countries of the southern Sahel.
The recent attacks that affected a number of drivers, including Moroccans, have left great anger among professionals who have demanded the necessity of diplomatic intervention to protect them from these attacks.
The union office for road transport of the southern provinces at the Guerguerat crossing recorded its strong condemnation of these acts that affect the safety of professionals and threaten the national economy.
Mohamed Afkou Obeid, Secretary General of the International Transport Union at the Guerguerat border crossing, stressed the need to provide security at the borders in the Sahel countries in order to protect professional drivers as well as protect trucks and goods on the roads connecting African countries.
The union actor stated, in his statement to the electronic newspaper Hespress, that professionals perform noble missions and work to transport goods between these countries; which requires providing security to avoid leaving them exposed to such attacks.
The same speaker continued that "the situation is currently stable, according to the assurances of professionals from the country of Mali; but the Moroccan embassy must move to communicate with professionals and provide prior guidance to avoid similar attacks in the future."
For his part, Mustapha Chaoun, National Secretary General of the Democratic Organisation for Transport and Multimodal Logistics, confirmed that the attacks on drivers left great panic and fear among them, although fortunately there were no victims.
Chaoun pointed out, in his statement to the newspaper, that "this matter poses to Moroccan diplomacy, the international community, and the United Nations the need to work to protect professionals; because this is not the first incident, but rather recurring incidents."
The union official indicated that this incident "is considered a ringing of the alarm bell in the region," stating that what the Kingdom is doing to rehabilitate infrastructure and secure the passage of trucks through ports "is the height of wisdom and a visionary view of the King to facilitate these exchanges and not to put the lives and property of professionals at risk in these sensitive points."
The union office for road transport of the southern provinces at the Guerguerat crossing demanded that the concerned authorities "assume their full responsibility and work to strengthen security measures to protect drivers, goods, and trucks during their movements between African countries," stressing that providing a safe environment for international transport "is considered an imperative necessity to support economic development and strengthen trade relations between the countries of the continent."
