The participants in a meeting organized, Thursday in Nador, by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, highlighted the richness and diversity of the natural heritage of the Marchica lagoon and the need to implement appropriate actions for its preservation and valorization.
During this meeting, which saw the presentation of the results of the mission of Moroccan and French experts conducted from May 29 to June 12 in the Marchica lagoon, the speakers pointed out that this lagoon is endowed with exceptional natural potential given the richness and diversity of its ecosystem, calling on all concerned parties to combine their efforts with a view to integrating this heritage into the social and economic development of the region.
This scientific mission was part of the vast program for the protection of the Nador lagoon, launched in November 2008 by the Foundation, which implements various projects and actions for the protection of the site as well as the fauna and flora, indicates the Foundation.
Thus, the experts worked to determine the content of heavy metals and pesticides in areas identified as sensitive, map the seabed, safeguard the dune cordon of the lagoon, create artificial habitats for juvenile fish, and valorize the salt marshes of Kariat Arekmane.
The conclusions of the scientists will allow for the taking of appropriate measures with a view to safeguarding this unique space in the Mediterranean due to its size (14,000 hectares), its environmental function, and its biodiversity.
The Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection leads this program for the protection of the Marchica lagoon, which consists of implementing education and awareness-raising devices for sustainable development on the territory, as well as strengthening capacities and environmental monitoring and sustainable management tools.
This study day was organized in collaboration with the High Commission for Water and Forests and the Fight Against Desertification, the MarchicaMed Agency, the French Conservatory of the Coastal and Lake Shore Areas, and the Rhône Méditerranée and Corse Water Agency.
