It is with regret and much nostalgia that the inhabitants of Mohammedia and those who have become accustomed to visiting it evoke the golden age of certain events that had given the city a cultural dimension and highlighted its multiple potentials. The Lute Festivals, the short film festival, the craft exhibitions, the Music Festival with Fantasia, the Flower Festival, the Mohammedia Summer Festivals, the Mohammedia International Festival, Environment Day, etc. So many events that the city is no longer able to organise.

"This year, the seaside city stood out for the scarcity of fictional events that did not restore its aura nor restore its image as a seaside city, city of flowers and holidays. The festivals organised in different cities of the Kingdom should be an example for the services concerned, which must get involved to safeguard the tourist vocation of an ambitious city whose only desire is to express itself in the desire for integrated sustainable development," emphasises an associative actor in Mohammedia. And to add that festivals are a forum for reflection on peace and exchange and do not only have the vocation of promoting meetings and singing and music events, but they are places of dialogue where ideas, thoughts, and talents meet, giving cities a meaning and a radiance. "It is strange that the city of Mohammedia turns its back on culture, art, and entertainment. The seaside city must consolidate its identity and be able to generate concrete results from recurring events whose imprint will be positive in the long term. Visitors who choose Mohammedia for their holidays do not come only for the sun and the sea, but for something else, the history of the city, the lifestyle of its inhabitants, and their culture," emphasises an inhabitant of Mohammedia. Instead of becoming unmissable events, the various festivals organised by Mohammedia have not lasted and have hardly succeeded in preserving the secular cultural and artistic heritage of the city to increase its notoriety on a national and international scale.

According to some well-informed sources, it is increasingly difficult to find funding to organise festivals in Mohammedia. Other people speak of a lack of communication and coordination between the different services of the city and the Ministry of Culture. In this context, it should be remembered that the Mohammedia Theatre Festival also almost did not take place this year because of a lack of coordination between the Ministry of Culture and the municipality. The latter prohibited access to the Abderrahim Bouabid theatre on the evening of the festival's opening under the pretext that one must have its authorisation and not that of the Ministry of Culture. After several hours of negotiation and an intervention by the governor of Mohammedia, the festival started a day late. It must be said that since its construction, the opening of this theatre has always been problematic. Despite the appointment of the artist Hamid Basket to its direction, the theatre has still not officially opened its doors. It seems that Mohammedia has relegated culture to the background.

The first edition of "Nawafid", the Festival of Maghreb Cultures which took place from June 18 to 22, had several objectives, in particular that of promoting the cultural potential of Mohammedia and its region and consolidating the union through an effective and dynamic partnership. Despite reduced means and a lack of support, the festival took place. However, one swallow, they say, does not make a summer. The city and its potential should get involved in the sustainability of festivals so that they bring together the inhabitants around unifying projects that highlight a city that strives to enhance its assets.
