The ochre city honours its deserving citizens

"I distinguish myself for my Homeland" is the theme of a tribute ceremony organised last Saturday in Marrakech in honour of citizens who particularly distinguished themselves during the year 2016 in fields as diverse as sport, culture, art, education, and social work.

The Marrakchis who distinguished themselves in different fields were honoured by the city's communal council. To this end, a tribute evening was organised on 6 August at the municipality headquarters to celebrate these deserving citizens who particularly distinguished themselves during the year 2016 in fields as diverse as sport, culture, art, education, and social work.

Through this initiative, organised under the slogan "I distinguish myself for my Homeland" and which is part of the celebration of both the Throne Day and the Youth Day, the communal council intends to honour the civic commitment of these people and organisations who have made the city shine and held its colours high.

This recognition evening, which brought together local authorities and personalities from different backgrounds, was indeed an opportunity to highlight the actions, performances, and commitment of these talents who contributed highly to the cultural, sporting, and economic development of their city and succeeded in placing it at the forefront of the scene. "These talents were chosen because, in particular, of their exceptional personal or professional journey as well as their significant contribution to the influence and shaping of the image of Marrakech," indicate the organisers, who expressed their determination to perpetuate this tradition.

"Whether it is a civic commitment or an extraordinary professional or personal journey, these people, each in their own way, have honoured the city and consolidated its reputation," explained the president of the communal council, Mohamed Larbi Belkaïd. This initiative aims to strengthen excellence and valorise these talents through merit and perseverance, he added. It should be noted that athletes were the largest contingent of the talents rewarded. In addition to athletes, judokas, kick-boxers, karatekas, boxers, gymnasts, and archers, a tribute was paid to the winners of regional, national, and international Quran recitation competitions, to the best high school graduates of the city, including Nihal Chahbar who obtained the best average at the national level (19.32), as well as to an association working in the field of caring for people in difficulty.
