The "Ghiwani" Festival blows out its fourth candle

The "Ghiwani" Festival blows out its fourth candle

Named after Mohamed Bakhti, founder and former president of the iconic group "Lamchaheb", this edition is initiated by the "Ghiwani Festival Foundation" association with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Council of the Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz region. The Festival will invite the public to savour a refreshing cocktail from the Ghiwani repertoire and to appreciate at its true value the richness of this musical genre that revolutionised the Moroccan artistic scene from the seventies. During these four days, the groups Lamchaheb, Tagada, Larsad, Jil El Ghiwane Raqraq, Mesnawa, and Ennassim, as well as popular troupes from the region, will take turns on the stage of "Dar Takafa" in Daoudiate. The programme also includes a tribute to one of the pioneers of the Ghiwani phenomenon, namely Mohamed Bakhti, as well as the screening of a documentary retracing his journey. During previous editions, tributes were paid respectively to the artist and one of the illustrious members of the legendary group Jil Jilala, Hassan Meftah, to the poet, lyricist, and playwright, Mohamed Chahramane, as well as to the veteran of the mythical group Nass El Ghiwane, Omar Sayed. It should be remembered that Meftah and Chahramane both died in 2013. This artistic event aims in particular to preserve and perpetuate this musical phenomenon as an essential component of the national heritage and a whole part of our culture. The Ghiwani spirit has succeeded not only in conquering the musical world but also in interesting other cultural facets, including dramaturgy through the book "Ar-Rahil" (The Departure) by the charismatic leader of the Nass El Ghiwane formation, the late Larbi Batma, the "zajal" of the founder of the Jil Jilala group, Haj Mohamed Derhem, and the seventh art through the film "Al-Hal" (Transes) by Ahmed El-Maânouni.

The Ghiwani phenomenon has influenced many groups both in Morocco and abroad, and more particularly in the Maghreb, to the extent that the rich Ghiwani repertoire draws its substance from the daily lives of Moroccans and the causes of the Arab-Islamic Ummah. In this context, it should be noted that the famous American director Martin Scorsese had described the group Nass El Ghiwane as the Rolling Stones of Africa and had been inspired by their bewitching music for his film "The Last Temptation of Christ". He even took charge of the restoration of El-Maânouni's film "Al-Hal", which traces the geographical and cultural itinerary of the legendary group. The creation of this Festival was dictated by the concern to both pool efforts to preserve this musical genre and ensure its continuity, to establish a platform for sharing information on the different Ghiwani experiences, and to highlight the invaluable contribution of the figures who worked to popularise the Ghiwani repertoire, specifies the "Ghiwani Festival Foundation" association.
