Educational tools for the promotion of good environmental practices

A new ‘'Educational Path of the Palm Grove'', a set of educational tools for the promotion of good environmental practices, has just been set up at Jnane El Harti in Marrakech by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection and its partners as part of the Programme for the Safeguarding and Development of the Marrakech Palm Grove. The objective of these educational modules is to reinforce environmental communication messages in public spaces to allow future generations to acquire a better understanding of the environment with the aim of inducing a better relationship with nature for urban populations, indicates a press release from the Foundation. The Foundation, which is chaired by HRH Princess Lalla Hasna, is a pioneer in this field of environmental awareness. In 2011, it created the first educational path at the Exotic Gardens of Bouknadel as a pilot project in Morocco. A variation of the educational path has also been installed, since 2011, at the Hermitage Park in Casablanca. This new educational path of the palm grove reinforces this environmental awareness network. It consists of several panels and interactive modules that communicate and raise awareness about the importance of the Marrakech palm grove. The system includes two public reception panels in the shape of palm trees, a module on the ecology of the palm tree, and a module in the shape of a pyramid that represents the layering of oasis agriculture under the palm groves. The theme of water is also addressed by two other modules. The first explains the water cycle and groundwater, while the second focuses on the ingenious system of khettaras (an ancestral technique of underground water drainage galleries). A final module is composed of three bins explaining the stages of composting green waste.
