Rabat: Nomination of the members of the Commission for support for the digitisation, modernisation, and creation of cinemas

Rabat – The Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, chaired, on Tuesday in Rabat, the ceremony for the nomination of the members of the Commission for support for the digitisation, modernisation, and creation of cinemas.

This meeting took place in the presence of Abdelaziz El Bouzdaini, Secretary General of the Communication Department and Acting Director of the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre (CCM), indicates a statement from the CCM.

On this occasion, the Minister presented the broad outlines of the new approach adopted to support investment in the cinema exploitation sector, the same source notes.

This approach aims to strengthen the momentum of structural reforms in the sector through the implementation of Law No. 18.23 relating to the film industry and the reorganisation of the CCM. It also intends to contribute to the emergence of a distinct economic model, adapted to the specificities of the sector, while encouraging investment and ensuring the marketing and screening of Moroccan films in cinemas.

Furthermore, the Minister emphasised that the central element of the national cinema market lies in the expansion of the network of cinemas.

This expansion should allow for better competitiveness between the films screened and offer appropriate cultural spaces to host festivals, cinematic events, and various cultural activities organised each year throughout the country.

Mr. Bensaid also reminded the members of the commission that public support for cinemas should not be limited to multiplexes located in large cities, but must also include the creation of small cinemas in medium and small towns, in order to offer the public spaces that meet quality, safety, and comfort standards.

In this regard, the Minister mentioned the national programme relating to the creation of 150 cinemas within cultural centres, within the framework of a tripartite agreement between the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the CCM.

This programme has enabled the creation of screening spaces that have sparked a keen interest from the public in the regions concerned.

The commission for support for the digitisation, modernisation, and creation of cinemas is composed of Mohamed Khouna (chair), Mariam Lee Abou Naoum (member), Rabha Ahrdane (member), Jaouad Babili (member), Hanane Tiattabin (member), Ahmed El Rhemmam (representative of the Communication Department / member), Abdelilah Zirat (representative of the Culture Department / member), and Samira Himeur (representative of the CCM / member).

In closing, the Minister addressed his thanks to the chair and members of the commission for having accepted this responsibility and for their commitment to the development of Moroccan cinema.

He also praised the active role of private companies and professional organisations in the sector, particularly in the fields of distribution and exploitation, in the positive dynamic that national cinema is experiencing today, the statement concludes.
