Focus in Rabat on the challenges of learning and teaching translation in Morocco

Rabat – Professors and researchers examined, on Thursday in Rabat, the challenges of teaching and learning translation in Morocco by opening an academic debate on the reality of translation in relation to the education, training and scientific research system.

The participants in a study day, organized by the Higher Academic Instance of Translation under the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, under the theme “Teaching and learning translation in Morocco: Current challenges and future visions”, highlighted the importance of this academic debate to diagnose the reality of translation and highlight its role in promoting education, scientific research, multilingualism and cultural emancipation.

In this regard, the coordinator of the Higher Academic Instance of Translation, Abdelfattah Lahjomri, indicated that this study day is part of the cultural and scientific activities of the Academy aimed at highlighting the challenges linked to the limits of teaching and learning translation in educational institutions and exploring ways to develop curricula and programs in line with the latest scientific and professional developments.

This academic debate constitutes an opportunity to exchange experiences and expertise between researchers and specialized experts, and to examine gaps that hinder the development of translation teaching, with a view to developing a clear reference framework for teaching this subject in the education system, he added.

In a statement to MAP, the Director of the King Fahd School of Translation (ESRFT), Mohamed Kharchich, noted that this meeting is part of strengthening the position of translation in the national education and scientific research system, emphasizing the pioneering role of the school as a pilot institution that ensures the training of translators and interpreters who have contributed and continue to provide distinguished services at the national and international levels.

And Mr. Kharchich highlighted the importance of teaching translation in light of rapid technological changes, particularly in relation to identity and communication between peoples, noting that artificial intelligence, despite its growing role in facilitating translation processes, cannot replace the human translator, but rather constitutes a support tool for their efforts.

He also called for using new technologies intelligently while keeping complex missions for humans, with a view to preserving the leadership of the human element, particularly in terms of translation.

Recalling the importance of a solid linguistic foundation before starting studies in the field of translation, the professor at the Faculty of Languages of Tetouan, Khaled Samadi, stressed that the promotion of translation requires quality teaching and the advancement of scientific research, but also the development of cognitive, linguistic and cultural capacities.

For his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Languages, Arts and Human Sciences-Settat Hassan I University, Abdelkader Sabil, pleaded for the evaluation of the reality of translation teaching by reviewing successful experiences and examining development prospects, particularly in light of digital and technological transformations.

This study day focused on several themes including the pedagogical structure of translation teaching, its relationship with scientific and technological research, the possibilities of integrating machine translation into the education system and its role in the development of linguistic skills and professional integration.
