Rabat.. Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Al Akhawayn University and the American University of Sharjah

Rabat – A Memorandum of Understanding was signed today, Wednesday in Rabat, between Al Akhawayn University and the American University of Sharjah, aiming to strengthen their academic and scientific cooperation in several areas of common interest, particularly the teaching of the Arabic language and the promotion of Arab-Islamic culture.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the American University of Sharjah, Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, and the Chancellor of the University, Mr. Tod Laursen, alongside the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Al Akhawayn University, Abdellatif Jouahri, and its President, Amine Bensaid.

This Memorandum of Understanding is part of a strategic partnership focused on Arab-Islamic studies, language pedagogy, and emerging technologies. It also aims to encourage cultural exchanges, collaborative research, and the development of a shared future vision.

Mr. Bensaid noted in a statement to the press that this partnership is framed within the founding vision of Al Akhawayn University, which centres on rooted identity, cultural openness, and technological development.

He pointed out that this strategic partnership seeks to strengthen joint research and reshape methodologies for approaching Arabic studies within the framework of artificial intelligence developments, and to develop innovative tools contributing to cultural prosperity and the well-being of young generations.

For his part, Mr. Laursen emphasized that this initiative embodies a shared vision for borderless higher education, based on deep intellectual cooperation. He also highlighted the ambition of both institutions to expand the horizons of joint research, while reaffirming their commitment to the ethical and responsible development of artificial intelligence applied specifically to the Arabic language and culture.

The two universities also seek to create a joint centre dedicated to pedagogy and digital humanities, incorporating contributions from artificial intelligence to support research in Arabic and Islamic literature, cultural dynamics, and modern communication methods.

In addition, this agreement opens the way for expanded cooperation in other disciplines, particularly science, engineering, management, architecture, arts, design, and archival research. It also intends to establish an open-source Arabic language database by collecting literary works, media content, and scientific publications representing the cultural richness of both Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.

The agreement also provides for the exchange of professors and administrative staff, the launch of student mobility programmes, and the development of joint research projects. It also includes the joint supervision of theses and dissertations, the joint organisation of conferences, seminars, and training, and the creation of funds dedicated to supporting joint academic initiatives.

This agreement falls within the strategies of both institutions aimed at forming partnerships with reference institutions at the international level, supporting multidisciplinary innovation, and contributing to the emergence of knowledge networks capable of addressing regional and global challenges.
