Rabat.. Appointment of members of the committee for the support of digitisation, modernisation, and creation of cinemas

Rabat – The Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, chaired the ceremony for the appointment of the members of the committee for the support of digitisation, modernisation, and creation of cinemas today, Tuesday, in Rabat.

A statement from the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre (CCM) mentioned that this meeting took place in the presence of the Secretary General of the Communication Department and the Acting Director of the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre, Abdelaziz El Bouzdaini.

The same source added that Mr. Mohamed Khouna was entrusted with chairing the committee, which also includes in its membership Mmes. Meriem Lee Abou Naoum, Rabha Ahrdane, Hanane Tiattabin, and the representative of the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre, Samira Himeur, as well as Messrs. Jaouad Babili, the representative of the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication - Communication Department, Ahmed El Rhemmam, and the representative of the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication - Culture Department, Abdelilah Zirat.

The statement explained that Mr. Bensaid reviewed on this occasion the broad outlines of the new approach adopted to support investment in the cinema exploitation sector, adding that this approach aims to strengthen the momentum of structural reform of the sector through the implementation of Law No. 18.23 relating to the film industry and the reorganisation of the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre.

This approach also aims to contribute to the emergence of a distinct economic model, adapted to the specificities of the sector, while encouraging investment and ensuring the marketing and screening of Moroccan films in cinemas.

The Minister emphasised that the essential element in the national cinema market lies in expanding the network of cinemas, which will allow for greater competitiveness between films, while providing appropriate cultural spaces to host festivals, cinematic events, and various cultural activities organised annually throughout the country.

The Minister reminded the committee members that public support for cinemas should not be limited to those in large cities, but must also include the creation of small cinemas in medium and small towns, with the aim of providing the public with spaces that meet quality, safety, and comfort standards.

In this regard, the Minister pointed to the national programme for the creation of 150 cinemas in cultural centres, within the framework of a tripartite agreement bringing together the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre. This programme has enabled the creation of cinema screening rooms that have been very popular with the public in the regions concerned.

Mr. Bensaid concluded by thanking the chair and members of the committee for accepting this responsibility and for their commitment to developing Moroccan cinema, while praising the vital role of private companies and professional organisations in the sector, especially in the areas of distribution and exploitation, in the positive dynamic that national cinema is experiencing today.
