Sale of military housing: Disappointment for Ouezzane retirees

The expert commission tasked with setting the market value of military housing located in Ouezzane has just finished its work.

Former soldiers and widows of martyrs residing in the Laâdir district have just learned this officially with, according to a statement of which they sent us a copy signed by thirteen of them, "a feeling of bitterness and ingratitude." And with good reason, they say, "the prices of the housing occupied for more than 35 years" by some of them "are exorbitant." The sums demanded for the transfer range from 100 to 220 million centimes, the statement indicates, specifying that "the wealthiest of their occupants receives a pension not exceeding 1000 dirhams."

The widows of martyrs and the retirees have been in shock since they heard the news. They feel "all the more aggrieved since some housing falling under the same estate in other cities where real estate is more highly valued has previously been sold at affordable prices." What they have not been able to digest, the same source continues, "is that they have been paying their rent regularly for more than 35 years despite their insignificant pension, always nurturing the hope of acquiring their housing at a reasonable price, and suddenly find themselves cornered into a difficult and morally blameworthy situation that can be summed up as follows: either they pay the sum imposed by the commission, or they leave the field open to property developers always on the lookout, to pay for them, thus taking the lion's share, and in doing so, reducing them to the bare minimum."

And yet, is it not stated on the introductory page of the service note relating to the transfer of housing no. 2642/EMG of 10 May 2001 that the primary goal of transferring housing to its occupants is to improve the social condition of members of the Royal Armed Forces?
