Gotion Power Morocco: The Kénitra Gigafactory ready to start its equipment
Batteries: Only thirteen months after the launch of the site, the Kénitra battery cell factory is completed. The commissioning of the equipment will begin from October 20, paving the way for the industrial production of LFP cells, a first in Africa and the Middle East. Gotion Power Morocco (GPM) is taking a decisive step in the realisation of its battery Gigafactory in Kénitra. Launched in September 2025 after the earthworks, the work has made it possible to complete the buildings and infrastructure of the cell factory in thirteen months. A delay that places the project among the fastest industrial achievements of this type on an international scale. The company attributes this to the commitment of its teams and partners, as well as the support of national, regional, and local authorities. Construction and infrastructure work for the cathode production unit has also just begun on the site. "I would like to salute the exceptional commitment of our Moroccan and Chinese teams, as well as the precious support of the State, without which this first Gigafactory in Morocco and the Middle East and Africa region could not have seen the light of day in such a short time," declared Khalid Qalam, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gotion Power Morocco. And he continued: "The start-up of the equipment, on October 20, is only a first step in the implementation of a unique and promising project, called upon to structure the industrial ecosystem of batteries in Morocco for the long term. This project goes beyond the industrial framework: it contributes to the sovereignty of the Kingdom in the field of green energies and accelerates the rise of sustainable energies in Morocco". A first phase of 20 GWh: The commissioning and start-up of the equipment will begin from October 20. This phase will pave the way for the industrial production of LFP cells, as part of a first phase with a capacity of 20 GWh. The site will manufacture cells and batteries intended for the automotive industry and energy storage, for the Moroccan and African market, but also for Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. An unprecedented logistics operation: This advance required a logistics operation of unprecedented scale for an industrial project in Morocco. Several thousand containers were shipped from China in order to transfer production lines and high-tech equipment to Kénitra, with the support of port and customs authorities. On the human level, GPM has to date recruited more than 400 Moroccan employees, including engineers, technicians, and operators. Most were trained in China, at the Gotion High-Tech group's production sites, then accompanied in Kénitra by the group's experts. These teams constitute the foundation of national expertise in battery technologies, which is set to strengthen with the ramp-up of the factory. Volkswagen partners with Gotion: On September 28, Volkswagen, a shareholder of Gotion High-Tech, announced jointly with the group, via an official statement, the creation of a joint venture in Kénitra. It will be dedicated to the production of 100 kilotonnes of cathode materials. A partnership which, according to GPM, testifies to the confidence of major global automotive players in the Moroccan industrial platform. The company sees this as a strengthening of Gotion's presence in Morocco and the Kingdom's position as a reference hub for the battery and electric mobility value chain.
