Awareness-raising on environmental protection

Awareness-raising on environmental protection

To raise awareness and educate about respect for the environment, such is the objective of the installation by the National Office of Electricity and Potable Water (ONEE), from the 13th to the 18th of last October at Bijaouane Square, of an Educational Village for schoolchildren from the city of Agadir and its regions. Fun activities, thematic workshops, debates led and supervised by instructors, which revolve around the saving of water and electricity, waste treatment and the importance that the safeguarding of the environment and the preservation of fauna and flora should take on. This Village dedicated to future generations also aims to be a platform to highlight the importance of the cleanliness of the coastline, as well as the danger that the excessive exploitation of fishery resources represents for the marine ecosystem.

Interactive video games and audiovisual materials were also made available to children to explain in a fun way the issues carried by this village, whose organisers aim, in particular, to involve schoolchildren in the establishment of a culture of respect for the environment. All this through messages on the protection of the coastline in accordance with the "Clean Beaches" programme initiated by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection.

The city of Agadir constituted in this regard the fourth stage of the Travelling Village Caravan, after those of Bouznika, Casablanca and Sidi Bennour. Let us recall in this sense that the neighbouring city of Tiznit will host the Village from the 20th to the 24th of this month. The city of Dakhla, for its part, will in turn have an appointment with the Caravan from October 31st to November 6th. This stage will coincide with the commemoration of the 39th anniversary of the Green March.

Furthermore, awareness and education on environmental protection cannot be achieved without the committed and continuous citizen involvement of all components of society. To do this, it would be desirable for the "All for a sustainable coastline" programme to no longer be organised on a seasonal basis, but rather to cover the 12 months of the year. It should be noted that the opening ceremony of the Educational Village was presided over by Mohamed Yazid Zellou, Wali of the Souss-Massa-Drâa region and Governor of the Agadir Idaoutanane prefecture, in the presence of several personalities, including elected officials.
