Irrigation: Japan supports Morocco
1,264 inhabitants beneficiaries of a project in Taroudant Cooperation: This project, financed by the government of Japan, aims to strengthen the resilience of the local ecosystem against the growing impacts of climate change and to contribute to improving the food security of the 1,264 inhabitants of the four Douars concerned. Morocco and Japan continue to strengthen their relationship of friendship and cooperation. An official handover ceremony for the project to improve hydro-agricultural pipelines in four Douars of the Toubkal commune was held on 19 October 2026 in the Taroudant province, in the presence of Nakata Masahiro, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Morocco, local authorities, and representatives of the Ouanamrou Association for Development and Cooperation, the project beneficiary. This project, financed by the government of Japan, aims to strengthen the resilience of the local ecosystem against the growing impacts of climate change and to contribute to improving the food security of the 1,264 inhabitants of the four Douars concerned. The initiative allowed for the installation of 1,742 metres of PVC pipelines, intended to improve water distribution to the villages and agricultural lands. This infrastructure will contribute to increasing water flow, reducing the time required for its transport to agricultural holdings, and expanding irrigated areas. It will thus promote better agricultural productivity and sustainable development for the benefit of local populations. The total amount of the donation granted by the government of Japan for the realisation of this project amounts to 646,026.70 dirhams. "In this mountain region, where inhabitants benefit from groundwater and snowmelt from the Toubkal massif, this resource constitutes a real treasure. It is essential for daily life, but also for agriculture, which supports many families. Previously, traditional earth canals led to significant losses during the transport of the precious liquid to the plots. Irrigation required a lot of time and access to it was sometimes unequal depending on the location of the fields," indicates the Ambassador of Japan to Morocco. Through this action, Japan reaffirms its commitment to the socio-economic development of rural communities in Morocco and the promotion of initiatives contributing to adaptation to climate change, sustainable management of water resources, and the strengthening of food security, according to the same press release, which welcomes "the excellent cooperation established with the Ouanamrou Association for Development and Cooperation as well as with all the local partners who contributed to the success of this project for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Toubkal commune".
