The pace of the expansion works of the Tangier Med port has begun to move slowly, and the two companies that won the contract are close to finishing all studies and intensifying practical efforts to establish the major workshop, which will take about three years.
According to sources overseeing the project, which will cost a budget estimated at 5.1 billion dirhams, the two companies that won the project are scheduled to finish the works at the end of 2027.
The two companies concerned intend to build a paved road that directly connects the port to their stone quarries in the region, with the aim of supplying the project with the necessary stones to build the main breakwater and secondary barriers; as well as the docks and the area allocated for building the parking runway, which the Tangier Med Special Agency (TMSA) will complete and finish in a second phase of the project.
The same sources confirmed that the percentage of work on the project, which began last September, has reached about 5 percent, noting that the pace of work will increase significantly after the completion of the road dedicated to the project, which extends for a distance estimated at about 12 kilometres and will be opened to residents after the project is finished.
Sources familiar with the details of the project, which will represent a qualitative addition to enhance the port's capacity, estimated that it will require the transport of more than 30 million tonnes of stones; which will require long months of continuous work in order to prepare it by the scheduled date.
