Merroun meets professionals in Tangier

The minister's meeting with professionals was an opportunity to deepen the debate on urban planning regulations and the main guidelines of the Tangier Development Plan project.

The Minister of Urban Planning and Land Management, Driss Merroun, held a consultation meeting on Monday in Tangier with building sector professionals in the region, with a view to examining the latest developments in the sector and the difficulties encountered by the professional body with a view to upgrading the built environment.

This meeting, which brought together the Regional Council of Architects of Tangier, the Association of Real Estate Developers of Tangier, the Association of Design Offices of the North and the Association of Surveying Engineers of Tangier, was an opportunity to debate several points relating to "The organisation of specialities and the structuring of stakeholders in the sector", "Urban planning between law and reality", "Training and continuing education in architecture" and "The legal arsenal and the updating of laws in force".

In a statement to MAP, Driss Merroun indicated that this important meeting offers the opportunity to learn about the problems encountered by architects and surveying engineers and to exchange points of view on ways to improve the building sector in Morocco.

The meeting was also an opportunity to deepen the debate on urban planning regulations and the main guidelines of the Tangier Development Plan project, which must integrate the environmental dimension and renewable energies, introduce modern techniques and guarantee fluid circulation in the future, capable of being up to the standard of the major projects launched by H.M. King Mohammed VI and the development that the city is experiencing, he said, calling on all stakeholders in the sector to concert their efforts and to involve civil society with a view to improving the urban scene and achieving the expected development.

He also stressed the need to "go beyond" the texts in force governing the urban planning sector, affirming that his department plans to enter into consultation with all stakeholders in the field in order to put in place new texts oriented towards energy efficiency and effectiveness, with a view to offering a liveable and pleasant environment for all citizens in the future.

In a similar statement, the President of the Regional Council of the National Order of Architects in the prefecture of Tangier-Assilah and the provinces of Fahs-Anjra, Larache and Chefchaouen, Abdelhak Ibrahimi, stated that this meeting, which brings together the building sector family, is part of a tour of the various regions of the Kingdom to discuss the problems faced by professionals and seek possible solutions to guarantee the evolution of the sector.

It was an opportunity, he specified, to look into the legal texts governing the architectural profession and urban planning texts, the definition of the responsibility of architects on construction sites and the training of architecture students, in addition to the continuing education of architects to better understand the building sector, stressing the importance of urban planning and the coordination of efforts within the general context that the city of Tangier is experiencing.

The President of the Association of Surveying Engineers of Tangier, Mohamed Diaz, for his part, affirmed that this "fruitful" meeting was an opportunity to highlight the role of the surveying engineer and to propose certain observations from the association to be integrated into the Tangier Development Plan.
