The Moroccan Cinematographic Centre (CCM) unveiled, last Saturday in Tangier, shortly before the closing of the 16th National Film Festival (FNF), the cinematic balance sheet for the year 2014, which reports a production of 20 films and an amount of 60 million dirhams (MDH) in public aid for the promotion of national film production.
Thus, in 2014, 20 Moroccan feature films were produced, while 13 new films were released in cinemas during this period, including “Behind Closed Doors” by Mohamed Ahed Bensouda, “They Are the Dogs” by Hicham Laasri, and “Anger” by Mohamed Zineddaine, indicated the director of the CCM, Sarim Fassi Fihri, on this occasion.
Regarding the amount of the advance on receipts granted to support national film production for the 2014 sessions, it amounted to 60 MDH, Fassi Fihri noted, pointing out that this amount concerns advances on receipts before and after production, as well as aid for script writing and rewriting.
The Commission of the Film Production Support Fund has, in this sense, decided to grant advances on receipts to 25 feature films (15 before production, 4 after production, 5 for script rewriting, and 1 for script writing) and to 7 short films (6 before production and 1 after).
In parallel with the aid granted to film production, two other types of aid were also granted, namely aid for the organisation of festivals (28 MDH) and aid for the digitisation of cinemas (7 MDH).
Regarding the amount of support from the fund for the organisation of film events for the year 2014, it stood at 27.34 MDH, granted to 52 festivals and other 7th art events.
In terms of film exhibition activity, the related box office receipts are estimated at approximately 66.73 MDH for 1,643,647 admissions in 2014. The Mégarama multiplex cinemas alone accounted for more than 44 MDH, or 66% of market share.
The amount invested by film and television productions shot in Morocco reached a record figure of nearly 1.17 billion dirhams (MMDH) in 2014, compared to only 220.90 million dirhams (MDH) in 2013.
