In October 2010, a conference held in Tangier recommended making 21 December the National Coastline Day.

Thus, for the first time, the regional directorate of equipment and transport for the Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El-Hamra region, in partnership with the ports directorate, celebrated this day.

The commemoration took place in two stages, the first in Tarfaya and the second in Boujdour.

The two events, which had the theme "Our coastline, our wealth, let us protect it", took place before a large audience and pupils who came from various schools in both towns. After a presentation during which he indicated that the Moroccan coastline extends over 3,500 km, of which 500 are located in the Laâyoune-Boujdour region, the regional director of equipment and transport highlighted the importance of the coastline, both commercially and in terms of tourism. Therefore, it is important to protect it from pollution. The presentation was followed by a documentary tracing the history of the three lighthouses in the region.

The first lighthouse is that of Boujdour town, which was put into service in 1958. It is 52 m high and emits light signals every 6 seconds. These signals are visible from a distance of 24 nautical miles. In 1968, the Cap 5 lighthouse was put into service. It stands 32 m high and emits signals that can reach 18 nautical miles at an interval of 10 seconds. The Tarfaya lighthouse, 13m high, is the newest. It was put into service in 1986 and its light signals, which are visible from a distance of 20 nautical miles, are launched every ten seconds.

Apart from the Boujdour lighthouse, which is powered by domestic electricity, the others are powered by electricity produced locally using solar panels, which contributes to environmental protection.
