The university wants to connect its students to the media world

The university wants to connect its students to the media world

"The UM5S student in the media landscape," such is the theme of this first edition of the Media-UM5S Crossroads which has just been organised by the CAIOS (Reception, Information, Orientation and Follow-up Centre) of Mohammed V-Souissi University - Rabat. Stated objective: to offer future graduates the opportunity to discover and practice a set of techniques and journalistic genres to bring them closer to the world of the media. It is a framework for exchange between information professionals and students with the aim not only of increasing the employability chances of future graduates, but also "to familiarise them with the many genres of journalism. Which would be beneficial for them both for their training and for their reintegration into the professional environment," to use the words of Radouane Mrabet, president of Mohammed V-Souissi University, speaking during the opening session of this meeting, the first of its kind. Thus, through diverse activities ranging from conferences to multiple initiation workshops on journalistic genres, the university wants to predispose students to familiarise themselves with the basic techniques of the profession. In other words, to help them acquire the necessary baggage for the collection, processing, and transmission of information. Furthermore, the holding of this meeting is justified by the rapid development of new technologies which allow better access and wide dissemination of information via, in particular, social networks. It is, in this specific case, "to encourage students to write and publish while absorbing writing techniques," indicates Mustapha El Khalfi, Minister of Communication and government spokesperson.

Questions to: Radouane Mrabet, president of Mohammed V-Souissi University"Laying the foundations for a rapprochement between university and media"With this first meeting, does the university want to promote the rapprochement between students and the media?

First, it must be recognised that this meeting is the fruit of a wish expressed by the students themselves. An initiative to be welcomed and supported, especially since the university, apart from being a transmission belt for academic knowledge, trains students called upon to integrate into the professional world. And this meeting is part of this framework. It is a question of granting future graduates the opportunity to practice certain journalistic techniques. This is to lay the foundations for a rapprochement between the university and the media.

By what means and for what purpose?

It is a set of workshops on the techniques of reporting, editorial, column, design, in short, on the tools for processing information. Students will find there the means to forge a little experience that will serve them in particular in their training course and their research, but also which will facilitate their integration into the professional world, especially that of the media. The goal is therefore to meet a need for solid and diversified training imposed by a demanding globalisation and thus promote better insertion of young graduates.
