Gas discovery in Morocco: 776 billion cubic metres in Sidi Mokhtar?

Gas discovery in Morocco: 776 billion cubic metres in Sidi Mokhtar?

In less than two months of work, the drilling of the Kamar 1 zone, in Sidi Mokhtar, in the Essaouira region, has already yielded results, described by observers as "exceptional". The British company, Longreach Oil & Gas Ltd, finished the first phase of its research in this field on 8 May 2014. The first statements that have filtered through speak of a significant discovery and a rich and promising site. Indeed, the estimates are colossal. China, which is following the great rush for oil and gas in Morocco very closely, speaks of natural gas reserves estimated at 292 billion cubic metres. These reserves could reach 776 billion cubic metres. For Amina Benkhadra and the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM): "these indices are encouraging signs to continue the exploration of this zone". At Longreach Oil & Gas Ltd, optimism is the order of the day. These are "very promising exploration results". This leads Malcolm Graham-Wood, a British expert, consultant in the energy industry and advisor to investment banks on Oil and Gas issues, to say that this is a "very important discovery". He also links these announcements to the climate prevailing in Europe regarding the conflict with Russia over the fallout of the Ukrainian crisis on gas supply. If the data is confirmed, many British analysts are already talking about Morocco as the future great gas and oil country in Africa. Something that Moroccan officials are avoiding confirming at the moment. If the very discreet remarks of the supervisory ministry and the government have changed for exactly a month, moving towards more optimism, the fact remains that Rabat is playing the Wait and See card. No rush. No big announcements. The file is being handled with caution. But the presence in Morocco of more than 30 companies, among the most reliable and serious in the world, such as Chevron and BP, proves that the country has already started a new path in the management of its energy resources. Not to mention this call from the Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment, Abdelkader Amara, on 15 May 2014, to Russian officials to come and explore in Morocco. "Russia has great experience and has large resources. We are very interested in seeing Russian companies explore in Moroccan sedimentary basins". Could this be the major clue that all observers were waiting for to attest to Morocco's gas wealth? For many, the year 2014 already seems to be the year of the Moroccan oil turning point. Wait and See.
