A tripartite partnership agreement was recently signed between the Mohammedia prefecture, represented by the governor Fouzia Mansar, the municipal council, represented by its president M'Fadel Mohamed, and the Roukia Foundation, represented by Jawad Youssfi, for the construction of the future grand mosque of the seaside city.

Located near the Twin Cities Park and the prefecture headquarters, this religious building will cover an area of 5,200 m2. The interior prayer hall of this place of worship will have a capacity for 2,600 men and 1,200 women.

The esplanade will be able to accommodate nearly 2,500 additional worshippers under the shade of the trees that will be planted on site. The mosque will be equipped with the necessary facilities and amenities to allow the faithful to perform their prayers in the best possible conditions. The minaret of the mosque will be 50 metres high. Estimated at 20 million dirhams, this project has been entrusted to the group of architects composed of Azdine Nekmouche, Amine Mekouar and Abdelmoula Imad-Eddine.

This group proposed a dominant white colour for the future mosque and materials consisting of carved yellow stone and green tiles. Illuminated glass with the 60 hizbs of the Quran inlaid is also planned. Thus, the sun's rays will be able to enter the prayer hall.

The construction site should last 20 months according to the clauses of the agreement. "The city of Mohammedia has committed to multiplying and developing places of worship, mosques in particular, to allow a larger number of faithful to perform their religious duties in good conditions," indicates a municipal official. It should be noted that throughout the year, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, the mosques of the Mohammedia prefecture, 168 in total, experience record attendance.

Thus, many religious buildings in Mohammedia and its region have been renovated to receive the local population. The renovation work was undertaken by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs. Benefactors also participated in some renovations. In this context, the "Al Mouminine" mosque in the Colline district benefited from a facelift including the upgrading of sanitary facilities and the provision of carpets. The Al Atik mosque, built by Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah in the year 1773, also underwent numerous works inherent to the sanitary facilities, painting, carpet equipment, fountains and tiling. In the same vein, projects for the construction of new mosques are planned, including the mosque that will be erected in the new "Ennahda" district. The work on the latter is 90% complete. The "Hay Al Mohammadi" district will also have a new mosque, 30% of which is already completed.

In 2012, the municipality of Mohammedia programmed several projects concerning places of worship, including the completion of one mosque and the construction of a new one in the lower city. Measures have been taken to complete the work on the Dar Essaâda mosque, built in the El Alia district for an amount of 4.164 million dirhams.
