Early marriage under the microscope
The Isis Centre for Women and Development and the South-North Centre are organising, in partnership with the National Union of Women's Organisations and in collaboration with Vital Voices, an international symposium on "The question of the marriage of minor girls: a sociocultural and legal perspective", on May 5-6, 2012, at the Palais des Congrès in Fès.
The main objective of this meeting is to discuss the causes and devastating consequences of this scourge and to help implement the family code adequately, and to participate in raising awareness among the entire population. The symposium also aims to influence decision-makers in such a way as to repeal Article 20 of the Moudawana and Article 475 of the Penal Code, and to provide for severe sanctions against any violation of the law and violence against women.The symposium will focus on raising awareness among parents, schoolchildren, associative actors, young and old, NGOs, judges, lawyers, members of Parliament, government representatives, and decision-makers on the urgency of cancelling the two mentioned articles and the adequate application of the family code so as to eradicate the social scourge of the marriage of minors.The symposium will look at the sub-themes of the marriage of m…
