French Senate Speaker Discusses Bolstering France-Morocco Partnership with Officials in Laayoune

French Senate Speaker Discusses Bolstering France-Morocco Partnership with Officials in Laayoune

Larcher, who is leading a large parliamentary delegation, held talks with the Wali of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region and Governor of Laayoune province Abdeslam Bekrate, President of the Regional Council Sidi Hamdi Ould Errachid, and President of the Laayoune Communal Council Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid, in the presence of French Ambassador to Rabat Christophe Lecourtier.

During these meetings, members of the French delegation learned about the progress and milestones achieved by Morocco in the political, economic and social fields, as well as the measures taken in the field of development, as part of the new development model for the Southern provinces, launched by HM King Mohammed VI in 2015.

Particular emphasis was placed on the tangible efforts deployed in these provinces, as well as on the programs and projects carried out in various fields with the aim of developing this region in line with the High Royal Directives.

The talks also focused on the momentum of all-round development in the region, as members of the French delegation emphasized the relevance of the Autonomy plan as the only solution to the artificial dispute around the Sahara.

They also examined ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas linked to local management, decentralization, health, water management (particularly drinking water supply) and waste management.

Subsequently, the Senate Speaker and the delegation accompanying him kicked off the construction project for the OSUI Paul Pascon French school in the city of Laayoune.

Set up on a 2-hectare site, including 3,500 m² of buildings, the project includes teachers' rooms, classrooms, schoolyards and multi-sports fields.

In a statement to the press, Larcher expressed his country's willingness to further promote its partnership with Morocco in various fields, particularly in the Southern provinces.

“During my visit, we tackled economic development in the region, renewable energies, infrastructure, transport and water management with various local officials”, he continued, emphasizing the human capital present at these provinces of the Kingdom.

Members of the French parliamentary delegation then paid field visits to several socio-educational and economic projects, where they witnessed at first hand the ongoing efforts to promote the comprehensive and integrated development of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region.

Strengthening the Franco-Moroccan partnership in the Kingdom's southern provinces was the focus of several talks held on Tuesday in Laayoune by Speaker of the French Senate Gérard Larcher, with local officials.
