The creation of the province of Sidi Bennour and 12 other provinces and prefectures came about in application of the guidelines contained in the royal speech on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the Green March.
On 22 January 2009, the Ministry of the Interior announced the creation of the province of Sidi Bennour.
