Call for the promotion of rock art heritage

Call for the promotion of rock art heritage

Participants in a study day on rock art sites in the Southern provinces, held on Saturday in Guelmim, called for the development of a well-thought-out emergency programme, dedicated to the preservation, promotion and enhancement of this national cultural heritage. During the closing session of this meeting, organised by the Centre for Sahrawi Studies and the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), they also recommended identifying and inventorying all Moroccan rock art sites and ensuring their inclusion on the World Heritage list. In the same vein, the participants stressed the need for the involvement and mobilisation of all relevant government departments and the conclusion of partnerships with the media in order to raise public awareness of the importance and value of rock paintings. To do this, they deemed it essential to organise training sessions for the benefit of actors concerned with the preservation of this heritage and the introduction of Hassani culture and rock art sites into school curricula, while calling for the organisation of an annual meeting in order to take stock of the achievements made in this area and to set up the action plan for each year. Held in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, the Agency for the Economic and Social Development of the Southern Provinces and the Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP), this study day was marked by the presence of the president of the CNDH, Driss El Yazami, and the wali of the Guelmim-Smara region, governor of the Guelmim province, and local elected officials and actors. It was an opportunity to examine ways to strengthen the role of local actors in the field of rock art heritage preservation, in view of the challenges facing the cultural component in the development process. On the agenda of this meeting were discussions on "definitions and presentation of a state of play of rock art and associated sites in the Southern provinces", "normative aspects and prospects for enhancing this heritage" and "the contribution of rock art heritage to local development".
