Like other cities in the Kingdom, the National Security family took the day of May 16, 2013, to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the creation of this security force, which constitutes one of the pillars of national sovereignty.
At the headquarters of the Essaouira province, the official commemoration ceremony of the event took place under the chairmanship of the governor and the controller general, head of the provincial security zone, who presented the annual report of his services. This highlighted the constraints and challenges faced by the national security elements on a daily basis due to the expansion of the urban perimeter, demographic development, and the deficit in material and human resources.
However, the security services in Essaouira have adopted several measures to combat crime according to a participatory approach targeting the hot spots of the tourist city.
With figures to support it, the controller general welcomed the results achieved by his services despite the modesty of the means: 19,090 individuals identified, 1,514 people referred to justice, 2,690 judicial procedures, the arrest of 441 individuals wanted for various crimes, and the dismantling of 42 criminal gangs composed of 143 people involved in 329 aggravated thefts. As for the efforts to fight drug trafficking, the controller general announced the arrest of 226 users and 141 traffickers, and the seizure of 7.6kg of chira and 22kg of cannabis. The unauthorised sale of alcohol was at the heart of the security services' efforts, which arrested 23 clandestine sellers and seized 412 bottles.
Traffic control and organisation involved 24,508 cars checked, the completion of 1,317 reports with a value of 793,175 dirhams, the withdrawal of 1,129 driving licences, and the seizure of 108 vehicles.
