The city of Dakhla will be equipped with an Urban Mobility Plan (PDU), an approach intended to control urban traffic flows by 2020, which must reconcile fluidity and quality of traffic while ensuring the reduction of congestion and road safety.
The city of Dakhla is experiencing constant momentum that calls for an anticipatory strategy to avoid future travel problems. In this sense, the Oued Eddahab-Ousserd Urban Agency, in consultation with local actors, has launched a strategic study focusing on urban traffic in the city over the coming years, following which a plan will be adopted to prevent problems that may arise due to exponential urban growth and the rapid expansion of the city.
The study sets among its objectives the regulation of traffic in the city, the organisation of parking spaces for vehicles and lorries, and the calming of urban traffic. This will make Dakhla one of the few Moroccan cities to integrate urban mobility into its development plan.
The plan also aims to enhance public space, optimise the organisation of transport means, and adapt urban development and infrastructure projects to traffic dynamics. The initial diagnosis of this study highlights the absence of a road network connecting certain neighbourhoods with the city centre due to the rapid development of affordable housing, particularly in the north and west of the city.
Among the challenges to be addressed by this plan are the problems caused by heavy goods vehicles accessing the city centre and the lack of road infrastructure, pedestrian crossings, and car parks. This study will propose concrete solutions to these problems and develop projects to support the development of urban traffic in the city of Dakhla.
The agency has also launched a study on the geographic information system, to enrich it by integrating documents relating to subdivisions and urban planning documents, which will involve integrating all geographic data into the database and developing specific tools to exploit the database, such as generating reports, cross-referencing data, and editing thematic maps.
