Environmental concern established as a priority

Work on the second phase of the project to create a green belt at the northern entrance of the city of Dakhla is currently in full swing. Planned over an area of 80 ha, the project to create the green belt in Dakhla is being carried out as part of a partnership between the High Commission for Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification, the regional, provincial, and municipal councils of Dakhla, and the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the Southern Provinces. This project, which highlights the dimension of sustainable development in the projects carried out on the chosen site, while reconciling ecological considerations with economic and social concerns, is currently seeing the implementation of the second phase of the work, which concerns the reforestation of 30 ha with a density of 560 plants per hectare.

This belt is part of the efforts to fight against desertification and the regeneration of native plantations, and the strengthening of the eco-touristic character of the Oued Eddahab-Lagouira region, as well as its sustainable development choices. The carefully chosen planted species were taken from the Tawarta nursery, located north of the city of Dakhla, which covers more than 7 ha. With a total cost of nearly 10 million DH, this project is intended to protect the city of Dakhla against sand winds, protect its infrastructure, and create recreational spaces for the urban population. Parallel to the creation of this belt, other tree planting and green space maintenance actions are being carried out inside the city of Dakhla to strengthen the fight against the advance of sand and contribute to improving the living environment of local populations. Let us recall that a series of projects are being carried out for the protection of the environment in this region and for the improvement of the quality of the marine environment of the Oued-Eddahab bay, through the preservation of biodiversity, the development of the coastline and beaches, and the recycling of wastewater. These projects notably concern liquid sanitation, the delimitation of the public maritime domain, the relocation of the public landfill, and fisheries research for the protection of the maritime environment of the bay, known for its vulnerable ecosystem and its delicate balance.

Thus, through these projects, the city of Dakhla is committed to a process of urban and environmental development to improve the living environment of citizens, while ensuring that the ecological dimension is taken into consideration in the implementation of development projects.
