The charming fortified Medina of Assilah, an Atlantic city located 50 km south of Tangier, is one of the most attractive places for tourism in the region. Its famous Moussem (festival) Culturel International des Arts, which is celebrated each year during the summer, transforms the walls of the well-preserved streets into an authentic open-air museum. Founded by the Phoenicians, ancient Zilis features one of the cleanest Medinas in the kingdom and one of the best sunsets in the world from its 15th century Portuguese walls.
