The Moroccan film "Les Divorcées de Casablanca" by director Mohammed Ahed Bensouda was screened on Tuesday in Cotonou (Benin) as part of the celebration of the Month of Francophonie.
This cinematic event, organised on the initiative of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Benin, took place in the presence of ambassadors and representatives of accredited diplomatic and consular missions, and members of the Moroccan community, on the occasion of the celebration of the Month of Francophonie, themed this year "Education, in its broadest sense, that shapes conscious citizens," according to a press release from the Kingdom's diplomatic representation.
The Moroccan Ambassador to Benin, Rachid Rguibi, stressed that the celebration of Francophonie is part of Morocco's commitment, as an active member of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, to promote the values of solidarity and dialogue, as well as to strengthen the rule of law, democracy, human rights, and the inclusion of women and children.
During the debate following the screening, the Moroccan director expressed his joy at meeting the Beninese public and the Moroccan community and at screening his film in a brotherly African country.
Also on the programme for the Month of Francophonie celebration is a musical concert by the Moroccan troupe Samifati and Transe Gnawa Express (Friday), a unique artistic journey fusing the rhythms of Gnawa music and electronic music.
Released in 2023, "Les Divorcées de Casablanca" highlights the journey of five women from different social backgrounds, facing the inequalities that affect divorced women in Morocco.
Through a narrative blending gravity and humour, the film denounces the injustices these women face, particularly the loss of custody of their children in case of remarriage.
