It seems that the epidemiological situation of measles (Bouhamroun), which is fatal to children, has begun to show worrying developments in the city of Tetouan and its neighbouring cities, where the death of a young girl due to complications resulting from her infection with the viral epidemic was recorded on Tuesday.
According to data obtained by the electronic newspaper Hespress, "Bouhamroun" has begun to cause terror in the hearts of the residents, especially mothers and fathers who have children who have not previously been vaccinated against the deadly disease.
Responsible sources in the health sector in the M'diq-Fnideq province confirmed that the number of recorded cases reached 70, and that they are stable and normal, and stressed that a wide campaign is including educational institutions in the province to ensure that students are vaccinated against this disease, and in the opposite case, they are vaccinated.
In light of the news circulating regarding the first case of its kind in the Tetouan province due to "Bouhamroun", Karim Aimari, acting director of the Saniat Rmel Provincial Hospital in Tetouan, acknowledged it, noting it was a girl from the province, confirming that infections were also recorded among the elderly.
Aimari said, in a statement to the electronic newspaper Hespress, that the challenge facing the hospital is the influx of cases after they reach an advanced stage of infection with the viral disease, which requires in the first stage receiving injections worth 900 dirhams per day, and treatment requires 10 days, a figure that low-income families cannot bear.
The acting director of Saniat Rmel Hospital and head of its emergency department noted that the cases reaching an advanced degree of the disease and the multiplication of the virus leading to the appearance of spots in all areas of the patient's body makes medical intervention focus only on treating the most affected areas, considering the epidemiological situation "delicate" and requiring the intensification and strengthening of efforts.
The same source mentioned that the current year constitutes an "exceptional one that I have not witnessed the likes of throughout my professional career, which exceeds 20 years", considering that it is a result of the stumbling that the process of vaccinating children against "Bouhamroun" witnessed, which remains a "deadly disease and was previously an epidemic that claimed the lives of children".
The speaker pointed out that the Saniat Rmel Provincial Hospital in Tetouan, in the face of this epidemiological situation for which alerts have been issued at the national level, is facing a "severe shortage of staff and doctors specialising in paediatrics, as there is only one specialised doctor in the hospital who is also suffering from the disease", calling for work to "remedy the situation quickly", according to his assessment.
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Health and Social Protection had launched a national campaign to review and catch up on the vaccination of children under 18 years of age against a number of epidemics and infectious diseases, including measles, during the period from 28 October to 17 November last.
