The city of Tarfaya is currently launching work for the development of its corniche. An operation that is part of the urban qualification programme for this small Saharan town of six thousand inhabitants. This project, with a budget estimated at 40 million dirhams (MDH), is carried out in partnership with the General Directorate of Territorial Collectivities, the regional council of Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra, the provincial and municipal councils of Tarfaya, and the Agency for the Promotion and Economic and Social Development of the Southern provinces of the Kingdom.
Other projects are also open, which notably concern the development of the municipal field (7 MDH) and roads and public lighting for the Al Massira subdivision (28.5 MDH). That is not all; work is also in full swing with the construction of a craft complex (7.7 MDH), a youth centre (3.4 MDH), a reception centre (more than 5 MDH), as well as the construction of a mosque (6.2 MDH).
The realisation of these development projects is likely to contribute to improving the socio-economic conditions of the population of the Tarfaya province, increasing the city's attractiveness, and making it a promising hub. Thus, these urban projects are in addition to other projects opened in this locality, including in particular the project to extend its port, the cost of which exceeds 500 million DH. This project aims to develop fishing activity at the port of Tarfaya (40,000 t/year, 300 artisanal fishing boats). The city indeed has several assets, notably the relationship that links it to the Aéropostale and the passage of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and his inspiration in Tarfaya for the writing of his famous work "The Little Prince". In Tarfaya alone, more than 22 buildings have already been identified by the Urban Agency of Laâyoune as historical heritage.
However, the problem of silting, linked to dune formations generated by sandy corridors that place the city on a permanent wind trajectory, constitutes a real challenge for the development of this city.
