Grand finale of the "Clean Beaches 2014" programme

Grand finale of the "Clean Beaches 2014" programme

Dressed in its finest summer attire, the beach of Safi celebrated the "Clean Beaches" operation sumptuously from 1 to 31 August 2014. The closing ceremony took place on Friday, 29 August, within the village installed along the campaign and christened "Lawlabiayat Assafi for animation and environmental awareness". Initiated by Ciments du Maroc, under the aegis of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, this ceremony officially closed the 2014 programme of the "Clean Beaches" operation. During this event, children from various associations in the city performed a unique show, punctuated by songs and dance, in addition to a fashion show during which creations made from fabric scraps, as part of the village workshops, were in the spotlight. To reward the diligence and exemplary behaviour of these children, the company presented them with certificates of merit and trophies also made in the recycling workshop. It should be remembered that the company has been involved in three beaches in the Doukkala-Abda region since 2001, the date of the launch of the "Clean Beaches" programme by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection. These are the "Lalla Fatna", "Karam Eddaïf", and, finally, "Safi City" beaches, which have been labelled "Blue Flag" since 2009. This labelling has only been maintained since then thanks to the constant and continuous efforts deployed by both the company and all the partners, notably the Wilaya and the urban commune. Through a strategy focused mainly on environmental protection and sustainable development, the various partners are actively committed to the realisation of an enriching animation programme, in phase with environmental awareness, with the aim of offering summering children educational and fun entertainment, while making them aware of the importance of preserving the environment, and more particularly the protection of the coastline. Furthermore, the closing ceremony took place in a climate of joy and cheerfulness, in the presence of the Wali of the region and Governor of the province of Safi, Abdelfettah Labjoui, the Deputy General Manager of Ciments du Maroc, Omar Abarro, the Director of the Safi cement plant, Mohamed Chafiq, and several other personalities and notables of the city. Safi fishermen angry: The National Federation of Traders of Marine Fishery Products in Safi indicated that it was not invited to participate in the celebration of the sardine days organised from 27 to 31 August 2014 in Al Hoceima, Agadir, Mehdia, Dakhla, and Martil.

In a letter addressed to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries, the Federation questions the reasons that motivated the decision not to invite the city of Safi to participate in the event.

Professionals in the sector emphasised the need to take into consideration the historical and cultural specificities of Safi, "considered a pioneer at the national level in the fields of fish quality, the industrialisation of fishery products, and the construction of fishing boats".
