The 4th edition of the Early Childhood and Kafala Fair will be held on 21 and 22 December at the Ministry of Equipment, Transport and Logistics' Reception and Conference Centre in Rabat.
This event, organised by the 1st early childhood portal "Bébés du Maroc", is targeting 1,000 visitors this year. For this 4th edition, the focus will be on the text of the Kafala procedure and its application, as well as an assessment of the current situation and developments in the 2002 Kafala law. This fair is primarily intended to popularise the Kafala procedure and clarify the steps to be followed for the families concerned.
It will also be an opportunity to present a new form of Kafala, namely that within the biological family. This meeting will also help raise public awareness about the importance of preventive actions against baby abandonment (child labour, school dropout, etc.) and the importance of caring for babies deprived of their families.
Let us recall that the study entitled "The Morocco of single mothers" carried out in 2010 by the Amers firm on behalf of the Insaf association revealed that every day, 153 babies are born out of wedlock and 24 of them will be abandoned. An older study conducted jointly by the Moroccan League for Child Protection and UNICEF showed that the number of abandoned children stood at 4,554 in 2008, or 1.3% of total births that year. Considering that not all abandonments are recorded, this rate was re-evaluated at 2% of the country's total births, or 6,480 children abandoned at birth in 2008.
