In a statement to MAP, Alami specified that the civil protection elements present on site, assisted by brigades from neighbouring barracks, managed to master the fire in record time, which did not cause any victims. This fire started following maintenance work on the air conditioning installations. A column of smoke was visible on the terrace of the House of Representatives following this fire which had started around 4:40 pm.
Resumption of activities after the fire was brought under controlThe services of the House of Representatives have resumed their activities normally, after the fire which broke out, Thursday afternoon on the terrace of the House, was brought under control, assured the President of the House of Representatives, Karim Ghellab, in a statement to the press. Here is the translation: "Around 4:45 pm on Thursday 23 May 2013, a fire broke out on the terrace of the House of Representatives building, caused, according to initial indications, by a short circuit between a welding device and the air conditioning gas pipes, in the worksite concerning the installation of the air conditioning units of the House of Representatives. This resulted in a fire, which affected one of the external air conditioning units, part of the terrace covering and some connection cables to the telephone and Internet network, without however causing any human loss. All preventive measures were taken immediately for the evacuation of the building, while ensuring close monitoring of the situation. The fire was contained and the situation brought under control immediately, thanks to the rapid intervention of the civil protection services and all the services concerned. As soon as the situation was brought under control, the House services resumed their activities normally".
