The rehabilitation of historical buildings and the use of local materials were at the centre of a conference held on Wednesday as part of the 13th edition of the Samaâ Marrakech Festival for Sufi meetings and music (25-27 December).
Organised at the initiative of the Al-Muniya Association of Marrakech for the revival and preservation of Morocco's heritage, this conference was an opportunity for participants to examine issues relating to the Medinas, the restoration of historical buildings, and the use of local materials, as well as the current state of historical monuments and the evaluation of their preservation policy.
This conference, which marked the kick-off of the 13th edition of the Samaâ Marrakech Festival for Sufi meetings and music, brought together experts, architects, writers, artists, researchers, and actors involved in the protection and preservation of the Medinas.
On this occasion, the director of the Maousimiya Samaâ Marrakech, Jaafar Kansoussi, indicated that the special attention paid by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the heritage of the old Medinas offers civil society a wide space to explore the future of this ancestral legacy.
In this regard, he stressed the need to deepen scientific knowledge about the Medinas to make the architectural and urban treasures that these ancient fabrics contain a mirror of the Sufi heritage.
In the same vein, Abdelaziz Belkeziz, a civil engineer and heritage expert, emphasised the importance of rehabilitating the historical buildings of the Medinas, noting the fundamental importance of using local materials in this large-scale operation.
In this sense, he mentioned the important projects relating to the rehabilitation and enhancement of historical sites, carried out in the Ochre City.
Placed under the theme "Marrakech, a high place for the happiness of the soul", the 13th edition of the Samaâ Festival aims to preserve Sufi Samaâ as a global, cultural, and spiritual artistic heritage.
Organised in partnership with the Marrakech Communal Council, this artistic and cultural event also aims to highlight the identity and cultural and spiritual traditions of the Kingdom, to respond to a need for spirituality, and to highlight the teachings and wisdom of the great Sufi masters throughout history.
