David Cronenberg: A moving tribute at the Marrakech Festival
On 2 December 2024, the 21st Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM) paid a moving tribute to David Cronenberg at the Palais des Congrès, celebrating his exceptional cinematic legacy. The event was marked by a touching speech from actress Diane Kruger, who collaborates with the Canadian filmmaker in his latest film, The Shrouds.

In her speech, the German artist expressed her wonder towards a man she considers an essential figure of cinema. "It was a true miracle to have had the opportunity to work with David." Kruger highlighted the indelible impact left by Cronenberg's work, which redefined cinema by blending bodily exploration and psychological thrillers. His films, such as The Fly and Crash, address complex themes like identity, reality, and human malaise. Diane Kruger specified that, although dark humour is not the first characteristic one thinks of when mentioning Cronenberg's work, it is omnipresent in his narratives, highlighting the absurdity of the human condition even in contexts of great emotional depth.

Kruger also praised Cronenberg's influence on future generations of filmmakers. "His legacy as a director and screenwriter continues to resonate, reminding us of the complexity of our existence and the art of storytelling," she affirmed.

David Cronenberg, through his work, has managed to transform the cinematic genre and push the boundaries of storytelling. The great Canadian director is now inseparable from complex and memorable characters. "I am never alone. I always carry with me all the characters from my films. They are here with me at this moment, on this cluttered stage." "It is a great honour for me to be among those who, through their cinematic art, have tried to give meaning to this world and to our mutually dependent existences," he declared.

For Cronenberg, the Golden Star presented by the FIFM crowns half a century of work, always highlighting the human condition. National and international celebrities at David Cronenberg's tribute On 2 December, the red carpet of the 21st Marrakech International Film Festival welcomed a host of cinema personalities, both national and international, who came to salute the tribute paid to David Cronenberg, a living legend of the seventh art. The stars of Moroccan cinema, as well as actors and directors from around the world, responded to celebrate the iconic work of this master of cinema, renowned for his films that are both bold and profound.

The public also had the opportunity to attend the screening of Cronenberg's latest film, "The Shrouds", a moment particularly awaited by the cinephiles present.
