Hydrologists of the world in conclave in Marrakech

The city of Marrakech is hosting, from 15 to 19 September, the 41st Congress of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH), a scientific conclave held this year on the theme "Groundwater: Challenges and Strategies". The event, organised by the Moroccan Committee of the IAH (CM-IAH), in partnership with the Ministry of Energy, Mines, Water and the Environment and the International Institute for Water and Sanitation, will see the participation of more than 600 experts and hydrologists from more than 92 countries, the organisers indicate. Organised for the first time in the MENA region, one of the most water-stressed regions in the world, this congress will offer a unique opportunity to discuss vital themes such as governance, protection and safeguarding of groundwater. This event brings together researchers, practitioners, institutional decision-makers and representatives of non-governmental organisations. The IAH Congress thus constitutes a unique opportunity for groundwater specialists to present and exchange their latest technologies and know-how in the field of groundwater management. For Morocco, where groundwater is considered strategic by the National Water Plan, it will also be an opportunity to share the Moroccan experience in managing these resources. The "Aquifer Contract" put in place by the water department for the management of several aquifers will certainly arouse the interest of the participants given its innovative nature in terms of participatory groundwater management. The work of the congress will revolve around several topical themes, notably "Climate change and groundwater resources", "Vulnerability, pollution and sanitation of groundwater resources", "Fractured aquifers in karst areas", "Management and governance of groundwater resources", "Tools and techniques for investigating groundwater resources", "Unconventional groundwater resources", "Groundwater and hydrocarbon exploitation". These themes will be presented and discussed in parallel sessions. In all, more than 360 oral communications and 320 poster communications are scheduled during this conclave. In addition to the thematic technical sessions, the Congress offers a programme of parallel activities, notably workshop meetings on specific and topical research subjects in the field of groundwater, courses on analytical techniques and tools in the field of hydrogeology, and thematic field trips in the field of groundwater resources. This Congress will be the occasion for the introduction to Morocco of the Early Career Hydrogeologists Network (ECHN) and the creation of a branch of this network at the national level. The ECHN will have the mission of promoting the career of young hydrogeologists by offering them the opportunity to meet with national and international actors in the field of groundwater, opening up to research groups, the international job market, and networking.
