The phenomenon of copper cable theft is not new, but it has taken on unusual proportions in recent months in Marrakech. The judicial police services of the ochre city managed to get their hands on a large quantity of copper cables resulting from thefts on electrical and telecommunications networks in a shack at the scrap market in the industrial district. The owner of this shack admitted to buying the copper cables with his two brothers from unknown persons and that they proceed to extract the copper before selling it outside the city of Marrakech. According to the initial elements of the investigation, 2.6 tonnes of cables were identified as having been stolen from the Maroc Télécom networks and those of the Autonomous Water and Electricity Distribution Authority of Marrakech (RADEMA). The judicial police services proceeded to the arrest of 4 suspects, the seizure of 3 vehicles, a truck, and a large sum of money. The investigation is still ongoing in order to identify the suppliers of stolen cables.
